Pawfficer Program

Pawfficer Program

The Impact of Pawfficers in Illinois Communities

In 2018, the Illinois State University Police Department approached us with a vision: to introduce a specialized canine that could strengthen connections between officers and the community they serve. They sought a dog that would act as a bridge between citizens, students, and the department. In 2019, we proudly placed the first Pawfficer, Sage, with ISUPD. Since then, we have placed over 10 Pawfficers in university and municipal police departments across Illinois. Pawfficers play a vital role in their departments by
Helping comfort survivors of violent crime, abuse, or trauma while they interact with officers
Work within the community at organized events to promote engagement between officers and community members
Act as a mascot or social media figure aimed at increasing community engagement with their departments
Assist responders coping with the aftermath of a difficult call or case
Provide levity in the facility and make it a ‘homier’ environment
Deescalate individuals in heightened states of emotion
Participate in advocacy work
Accompany resource officers
And so much more!
The Impact of Canine-Assisted Therapy
The therapeutic benefits of canine-assisted therapy are far reaching. Aside from some of the better-known positive physiological aspects of interacting with a therapy dog, such as the release of oxytocin or lowering of blood pressure, growth in the areas of empathy, emotional stability, interpersonal relationships, willingness to engage in therapy or counseling, retention, and more has been observed across the spectrum of canine-assisted therapy dog uses. Ongoing research into the benefits of therapy dogs in first responder facilities is already showing promise when discussing increased engagement, employee retention, reported job satisfaction scores, and willingness to seek and engage in additional therapeutic activities, as well as a reflection of these positive impacts within the community the department serves.
How it works
First, we determine if we’re the right program for your facility. Each dog is selected and trained individually, with the needs of our facilities’ staff and community in mind. We’ve found a combination of traits to be imperative for these special dogs and as such, selection is paramount to the process. The dogs then receive a minimum of 1,250 hours of training in a wide array of scenarios. Our facility therapy dogs and Pawfficers are placed as permanent members of the departments; the majority of these dogs live in their departments/houses 24/7. During placement, SIT staff will instruct members of your department on everything from social media engagement utilizing the animal to living with a dog within your facility!
